First performed in 2003, Emma Rice and Kneehigh’s Tristan & Yseult is considered one of the most influential theatrical productions of the 21st century.
This new revival of the show at Theatre Royal Bath marks its return for the first time in a decade.
Based on an ancient myth, the story focuses on French knight Tristan. He kills Morholt, who invades Cornwall from Ireland, and is then tasked with fetching Yseult, the Irishman’s sister, so she can marry Cornish king Mark. However, during the journey to Cornwall, Tristan and Yseult accidentally drink a love potion which leads to chaos and tragedy.
The tragic love affair is framed through the eyes of the Club of the Unloved, a chorus of geeky “love spotters” wearing anoraks, balaclavas and thick glasses led by the smartly dressed narrator Whitehands (Stephanie Hockley).
Tristan & Yseult is a wonderful show that’s both anarchically hilarious and beautifully poignant.
The action begins while the audience are still taking their seats as the Club of the Unloved humorously entertain on stage with love-themed songs.
The performances are all outstanding as actors fill the simple but highly effective set with singing, dancing and acrobatic swinging that the crowd on press night absolutely loved.
The cast is great across the board but special mentions go to John Leader as Tristan and Nandi Bhebhe as Yseult who have brilliant chemistry, while Tom Fox delivers top comic moments, first as the invader Morholt and then in drag as Yseult’s maid Brangian.
Tristan & Yseult remains a theatrical masterpiece that is funny, inventive, visually spectacular and moving. It got one of the biggest standing ovations we’ve seen in a long while. Don’t miss it!
