Established in 1743, St Nicholas market in Bristol is still a vibrant part of the city today. With its myriad of independent businesses selling jewellery, vinyls, clothes, souvenirs, photographs and much more, it’s a location firmly on the map whenever friends visit Bristol.
We loved its food stall selling tasty Jamaican food, veggies delights, smoothies and creamy cakes, there is something for everyone. However, we recently discovered a side of St Nicholas Market that we’d never imagined.
Underneath the covered market lies a series of tunnels that make out air raid shelters where Bristolians took refuge during the Blitz.
We took part in a fantastic tour to find out more. Suitably dressed in an authentic air warden jacket, Duncan, our knowledgeable guide took us down stairs and corridors which we couldn’t believe we had not known about for so long.
Using historic artefacts and lots of anecdotes about this undergroup world, Duncan had our group entranced. The tour is a real opener and offers a captivating slice of Bristol’s history.
We truly recommend it! You can find out more here.
Next time you tuck into a tasty lunch at St Nicks, now you’ll now what lies beneath your feet!
