If you like bright colours, bold design and large scale paintings, then you must catch the Albert Irvin and Abstract Expressionism exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy (RWA) in Bristol before it closes on 3 March.
Neither Dan or I were familiar with his work before discovering it a few weeks ago when we were invited by the gallery for a lunchtime visit.
Influenced by post-war American artists such as Jackson Pollock and Adolph Gottlieb who he discovered at a MOMA exhibition in London in the late 1950s, Albert Irvin embarked on a journey of colours and abstract expression.
The RWA Bristol exhibition offers a chance to admire several of his gigantic acrylic masterpieces, alongside artwork by some of the painters who triggered his artistic revelation including Pollock, Motherwell and Francis, plus some other superb British abstract artists.
Also, don’t miss the brilliant display of paint splattered brushes, pots and shoes that reveal the effort that went into Irvin’s work.
With everything going on in the world, we can all do with some colour in our lives right now. A must see!
